OLD RUNDOWN TOBACCO GROWER’S COTTAGE RESTORED TO WIN

2015 HIA EASTERN VICTORIA HOME OF THE YEAR

Ronad Constructions has been awarded the 2015 HIA Eastern
Victoria Home of the Year for its renovation and addition of a family’s once rural weekend retreat.

Historical touches add to the rustic appeal and story of this home. The incorporation of recycled and reclaimed materials recovered from a 106-year-old homestead together with locally grown timber flooring from the original home, helped retain the rural feel of this once rundown tobacco grower’s cottage.

The exterior has been completely reclad in galvanised iron with feature rockwork and Silvertop Ash timber cladding around the front entry wall, allowing the renovated cottage to blend seamlessly with the surrounding tobacco kilns and shedding.HIA Winner

All windows in the original cottage were replaced with full height windows and sliding doors. The old skillion roof was removed and replaced with a new truss roof and a verandah constructed to three sides of the original building.

“The renovation showcases an effective mix of materials sympathetic to its environment,” the judges commented. “The innovation and consideration to environmental sustainability whilst incorporating personal touches and preserving the sites history is outstanding,” they added.

A focal point is an old world arched door, sourced from a local second hand dealer, guiding you into the new addition.

The large extension includes a magnificent kitchen with walk-through butler’s pantry. Boasting rustic elements blended with modern contemporary features, the kitchen features white full gloss 2-pak doors. Caesarstone benchtops with waterfall ends, plus old brick paved floors.

A striking Tasmanian Oak staircase with glass balustrading leads to the main bedroom on the upper level with its executive style marble tiled bathroom and extensive walk-through wardrobe.

An eye-catching timber truss highlights the pitched ceiling in this room, again marrying the rustic with modern elements.

Large windows allow you to look out to the beautiful views from all directions with a large covered balcony.

“Overall this is a well-balanced home with great attention to detail,” the judges concluded.

HIA Victorian Executive Director Gil King congratulated the team at Ronad Constructions and all Award winners, “This is an outstanding result for Ronad Constructions and the owners of this beautiful property. After losing everything in the Black Saturday bushfires at Kinglake, the family now have something to smile about. Rob and the team at Ronad Constructions have delivered an outstanding showcase of workmanship in such an intricate and unique renovation and addition project,” Mr King applauded.

“The HIA Eastern Victoria Regional Housing Awards this year were extremely competitive, with an unprecedented number of entries received. A testament to the growth across the region,” said Mr King.

All winners and finalists should be proud to have reached the heights of building standards demonstrated in these quality homes,” he said.
